Thanks Ray. These are important distinctions and also reframe a certain amount of responsibility on those of us who may tend to pedestal(ize?) teachers. Chögyam Trungpa—loved his messages and crazy wisdom and/but some his behavior was abhorrent. Interesting to think about politically, as purity testing and virtue signaling aren’t the reality indicators that people wish for them to be.
We always need to be discerning about how much information we absorb from our teachers that is not ours, but, instead a projection of theirs. Trusting inner wisdom is fundamental to our spiritual growth. 'Know Thyself' is of major importance on the spiritual road!
Hi Ray, in thinking about the "delicate balance" it seems to me that we need to get much more clear about our terms. "Enlightenment" is a wide term as is "self-mastery."
I will tell you about my experience as written in my book ALCHEMICAL TANTRIC ASTROLOGY.
I had an experience I like to call listening to the Music of the Spheres on the little Spanish island of Formentera. I do not know how to catagorize it, but lets just say that after many years of meditation and difficult hitch-hiking around Europe, it was something of an enlightenment experience.
I later talked to my yoga teacher, Baba Hari Dass, and he was apparently not very impressed, however others have been. My point however, is that to what ever extent it had anything to do with enlightenment, and it did appear to make it easier to be celibate for awhile, I would not bet my slim reputation on rejecting advances by a lovely woman. Of course my Sun and Moon are in Scorpio. Ha!
My point is that "Enlightenment" and "self-mastery" are wide categories and there are many aspects that need to be con-sidered (as in "with the stars") in this "Delicate Balance."
