Edgar Mitchell's Cryptic Message

While searching through some old notes in my file cabinet recently, I came across something I’d transcribed from a magazine called “Kindred Spirits” (Summer 1997 issue). It’s excerpted from an article by John Chambers titled “Message From Space: An Interview with Edgar Mitchell.” It involves a curious passage where the former NASA astronaut was asked about the UFO phenomenon, and the possibility of reverse-engineered alien technology. Here is what he said:

Edgar Mitchell: I was very hands off, very skeptical of this whole area, for many, many years. But during the past five years I have been looking at this business seriously, and I am looking at it with very serious people. And I find that there is strong evidence to suggest that a covert effort by governments at back-engineering has found its way into quasi-private circumstances; that is, it is no longer directly under government, or military, control, though it is using government money. . . I’m speaking of flight technology development and development in the area of mind control. Efforts during the Cold War on the part of both our intelligence community and the Soviet intelligence community may have been integrated with these areas of mind control technology.

Question: How is this mind control being used?

Edgar Mitchell: I don’t know for certain. I can only speculate. But there is strong circumstantial evidence to suggest that this technology is being used to disseminate disinformation.

Question: What is the purpose of this disinformation campaign?

Edgar Mitchell: To take people’s attention away from the gravely serious matter that there is back-engineering and, perhaps, adaptation of ET technology with our own technology, by a group of people, out of control, no longer under government supervision, but spending billions of dollars of taxpayers’ money.

This exchange is worth considering for several reasons. Yes, Dr. Mitchell suggests the source of this technology may indeed be extraterrestrial, or non-human; but more concerning is the possibility it may have been appropriated by earthbound agencies for their own ends, in ways beyond governmental or public oversight. Furthermore, such technologies could have been involved somehow for purposes of mass mind control. (?)

What are we to make of such claims? Did Mitchell really have knowledge of these matters, or could he have been the victim of an elaborate disinformation campaign? If indeed such technologies exist, what would happen if they fell into the wrong hands? For example, suppose a corporation desired to influence a population to enhance its profits; or a leader wanted to manipulate public opinion. (Of course, one could well argue modern media technologies like TV and the Internet already serve this purpose quite well!) On the other hand, some have speculated these technologies might have more to do with the development of mind/machine interfacing, employed for navigating vehicles rather than manipulating the masses, for instance.

For now, however, this will all have to remain just speculation until hard evidence comes in.
